We had our first preview performances of Pinocchio at Deaf West Theatre this weekend, a minor miracle considering we barely finished teching the show (incorporating all the technical elements such as lights, costumes, and sound) the very same afternoon of our first preview. While acting-wise we have been in fairly good shape for a while, the production side of the show has been playing catch up, and subsequently everyone pays some kind of price. But we all pulled together to make it happen, and happen it most certainly did ... for the most part.
Yes, the previews were a minor miracle, but our first performance also ended in something of a major disaster when two of our actors' heads collided in a black out at the end of the show. One of them was fine, but the other was definitely not, so the curtain was closed and the audience went home without seeing the final scene. Not the most desirable way to finish a show, but what else can you do when one of your lead actresses is struggling to remain conscious?
In the end she was fine - no concussion or anything according the nice paramedics who arrived on the scene within minutes. She left with a light headache, a little shaken, and with no recollection of what happened. Including that she told one EMT she would look him up on Facebook.
Aside from that little fiasco we really are doing well and this show is an absolute blast every time. Exhausting and sometimes stressful, but maybe some of the most fun I've had on stage. Opening night is this Friday!
