Miscellany

I think it's about time for a general update. Insert breaking news graphic and dramatic music.

- I've had 4 auditions for short films/webseries within the last week after a month-long dry spell, and I've got a non-union commercial audition lined up for tomorrow. I wish auditions were a little more consistent and evenly spaced, because when things happen all at once like this I end up feel under-prepared. I felt good about all four auditions (though I didn't book any of them), but I also know I could have done better. Live and learn.

- Chad and I are ramping up our training for the Camarillo Half-Marathon coming up in early October. The tempo runs (shorter, faster workouts) are killing us! We're definitely used to distance, not speed. Chad is my big cheerleader on those runs as I invariably start saying "I can't" and he perpetually assures me I can. On our run the other day he said "the reason we are doing this is because it's hard" and that hit the right chord with me. If it was easy already you wouldn't have to train - you'd just go out and win a marathon. Good running advice, and good life advice.

- We are waging a war on the millions of ants living under and around our apartment. It's gotten so bad that sometimes we talk about moving, but it's been noticeably better this past week so that kind of talk has died down. We do love our place...

- My full-time day job summer is past the half-way point now, and I've grown accustomed to the schedule. No more migraines (which I had the first two weeks) and the days seem to go by faster now. It's been a good thing, as much as I complain about it.

- We've been making good use of our ice cream maker and experimenting with tons of yummy flavors. The most recent resounding success was "vanilla and brown sugar" (served with an incredible fruit cobbler Chad made). Next I want to try chocolate-mint-grasshopper-cookies-and-cream. Then maybe something crazy like lavender or Earl Grey tea...

And that's life in my little corner of the galaxy today. Cheers to you and yours, wherever you may be!

Beneath this cold, calculating exterior...

I'm a big softy. And I bet some of you are too, so I have little to no shame in admitting here that I am a daily patron of the Itty Bitty Kitty Committee - a Northwest-based foster kitten blog. The lady that runs it is a foster-mom for The Humane Society of Tacoma and Pierce County, and has developed quite an impressive following (due in no small part to the 100+ adorable little furry monsters that she has brought in to her home over the years.)

She is currently collecting donations for their shelter's yearly fundraiser (deadline Friday!) and I just thought I'd give their campaign a little plug here, since I love all the itty bitties so much, and since they are so close to making their goal of $40,000 (!)

. So go on over, swoon over the kittens a little and maybe consider giving an itty bitty donation to a great big cause.

From Occasional to Habitual

I have some actor friends who make it a goal to do something for their career every day, even if it is a very small thing like sending an email or a postcard. I think that's pretty smart, so I'm trying to take a leaf out of that book and get habitual about getting my rear in gear with one or more things daily that will (hopefully) move me forward in this crazy pursuit of pretending as a living.

So today I am popping in to let you all know I have given my website a big, fat makeover. Go take a look! It's not exactly what I want it to be yet, but much better than what I had before.

And it's under my own domain name now! Like I said, even a small thing is something.

Being a Better World Shopper

Better World Shopper is a great website that came to my attention recently, and I really wanted to share it here with all of you. I could explain what they're all about, but why do that when they have already done it so concisely?

Cool, yeah? I thought so.

It's not a perfect site - they use a lot of acronyms and such that you have to look up to see what they actually mean, and personally I'm always a fan of having some anecdotal data to supplement the hard facts. And if you're a skeptic you'll probably want to do your own digging on some of these claims. But I think it gives you a good overall idea of what the best and worst brands and companies are out there for everything from fast food to clothing to gasoline.
